REK bookcase

October 25, 2010

REK is a bookcase that grows with your book collection. The more books the bigger the bookcase gets. The zigzag shaped parts slide in and out to accomodate books in the resulting voids. REK will always be full, regardless of the quantity of books. Also the books can be arranged according to their sizes. The narrow spaces are excellent for magazines.

REK is available in four different colours for the inside: dark grey, light grey, warm grey and avocado green. The outside comes in high gloss white. Of course we can discuss other colour options if you wish. REK is nearly two meters high and it can become over two meters wide. It is hand made in the Netherlands by Bom Interieurs, a highly skillfull Dutch interior company. The person actually making REK at Bom Interieurs used to be a violin maker.

Impression of the group exhibition ‘Autofficina‘ at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The exhibition took place in a former car garage in the new design area Ventura Lambrate. The character of the old design district of Zona Tortona has changed over the years and Ventura Lambrate provides cutting edge exhibitions again with a focus on content. The first edition has been a  huge succes.

Undercover Beauty

April 1, 2010

China is one of the main producers of cheap laminated chip wood furniture. It is also the country of the delicate Peony flower, a national symbol. It is a product that takes time and care to produce and is a luxury product. Undercover Beauty by Dutch designer Willem de Ridder combines both icons resulting in a rich and honest new product. The engraved flower shows the beauty of a cheap construction. It will be presented as part of the ‘Autofficina‘ exhibition in Ventura Lambrate.

March 20, 2010

Stool designed by ALDO BAKKER for design gallery PARTICLES. Information by Particles: “Stool is composed from a volume, a flat surface and a line, a composition that evokes associations with ‘corporality’. It reveals both the individual volumes and the relations, and often fragile connections, of an organically grown skeleton. The object is explained from the inside out”. Well, fortunately the design itself is much more appealing than this odd description. Particles will be located at Via Ventura 6, in the new design area Ventura Lambrate.

Plato Alto cabinet

March 19, 2010

Cabinet Plato Alto is carved from a single piece of marble. Designed by Jeff Miller for italian design label Cerruti Baleri. Simple and clean. Maybe more interesting as an autonomous sculpture rather than a object  for storage. And yes, it takes a lot of material waste to create this. Hopefully they have reused it wisely. It will be showcased in the Cerruti Baleri showroom at via felice cavallotti 8, Milan. Via Dailytonic

Shrub tables

March 19, 2010

Shrub tables for Beglian design lable Quinze&Milan by Chinese designer Zhili Liu. Great tables altough very similar table designs have been produced by others over the past few years. Nice detail is how the joints of the branches are visible in the table top. Via Dailytonic

Totem cabinet

March 18, 2010

Totem cabinet is designed by Vincent van Duysen for Dutch design label Pastoe. The symmetry and the use of the cabinet, which consists of linked bodies, are pure according to the designer. The cabinet can be put in different configurations. A nice and subtle piece of furniture fitting in very well to the sleek and sober style of Pastoe.

Saint Tropez chair

March 18, 2010

The airiness and swimming pool like colour of the seat bring summer days to mind in this chair. French designer Christophe Pillet must have sipped a cocktail when coming up with this one. He designed it for Italian design label Porro. Only thing is it makes you wonder how the seat will stay nice with that pointy frame sticking in the corners. Visit the Porro showroom at Via Durini 15 in Milan if you want to see this for real. Via ME Design magazine

Willy chair

March 18, 2010

Let’s nominate this one for the ugliest chair design at the Salone 2010. ‘Designed’ by Guglielmo Ulrich for Poltrona Frau.  If the picture makes it look ugly, then the real thing must cause nausea. Even the name is ugly… Enough said now. Via Stylepark

The invisibles chair

March 18, 2010

Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka has created a series of transparent furniture for the Salone showroom of Italian designlabel Kartell. It truly fits to Kartell’s collection which traditionally holds a wide range of transparent polycarbonate chairs. Clearly not very comfortable but rather a conceptual expression of Kartell’s style. Not sure if it will be noticed in the visual overload at the fair so it’s good we give it a little attention here. Via Dezeen

VOLT table

March 17, 2010

VOLT is a table of which the legs and top seem to have melted together. Faceted surfaces yet a fluent, continuous shape. Dynamic and at the same time minimal. A table that seems impossible like an Escher drawing. It continues to fascinate due to its elusive appearance. And last but not least: it’s by all means a practical table with four legs and space for six chairs. VOLT is 75 cm high (2.5 ft) and the table top measures 220 cm (7.2 ft) by 100 cm (3.3 ft). The table is spray painted and can be produced in various colours. VOLT will be presented as part of the AUTOFFICINA exhibition in Ventura Lambrate. Click HERE for directions.

Poliart side table

March 17, 2010

Side table designs named Poliart by LUCA NICHETTO for Italian design label CASAMANIA. It displays abstracted maps of Istanbul, Barcelona, Paris or Venice. Not that great to pack in your luggage on a city trip but rather to talk about your adventures back home over a cup of coffee. CASAMANIA will present their new products at Fiera Milano, Rho; Hall 8 -Stand D 31.

Alodia stool

March 17, 2010

Italian design brand CAPPELLINI will launch their new stool design called Alodia. The stool has been designed by American designer TODD BRACHER. The stool is made of two steel tubes and a steel sheet as a seat. It looks minimal and fragile yet at the same time it has a bit of an eighties character.
